Overwatch: Best team comps and builds - Assault - December 2016

Our round-up of the best team picks for Hanamura, Temple of Anubis and Volskaya Industries

The Assault maps in Overwatch provide about as simple and pure a fighting objective as you could expect from just about any shooter out there. One team's task is to fight and take control of two successive points while racing against a clock, while the other team does their best to prevent them from doing precisely that. Once the timer has expired, one side or the other is declared the winner and the match concludes. What could possibly be simpler than that?

Well, nothing is ever entirely obvious when it comes to matching up the heroes and counter-heroes of Overwatch, and so we've put together a quick primer on the best team comps and builds you might want to think about using on Hanamura, Temple of Anubis and Volskaya Industries - the three maps that make up this category. A little further down this page, we've got links to our other guides that take in the Control, Escort and Hybrid battlegrounds if you need suggestions for those.

A quick note on our approach before we start. Note that the characters we prefer on all of these maps can be used to fashion yourselves a very solid starting team before the match proper starts. While that's all well and good, you must - as alway - adapt to deal with the evolving threat on the other side of the map, or you're not really playing the game the way it was intended - and you'll probably lose to boot...

Keep in mind as well that, rather than rigidly giving you a strict pick of six Heroes, on each map, we've allowed some flexibility in our character choices for Tank, Support, Defense and Offense roles. It's worth mastering all of the Heroes we reference across this series of guides, incidentally, as they're commonly used on every map in the game, and the broader experience will dramatically increase your performance.

Things are looking pretty simple right now, but we'll no doubt see some highly imaginative team comps emerge within Overwatch's developing metagame, and we'll be sure to add these to this article the next time we update it. Let us know in the comments section if you've discovered any fun team composition strategies, and we'll update this article to include them. Have fun!

Assault map team comps and builds

Here are our preferred pools of Heroes for each Assault map in the game: Hanamura, Temple of Anubis and Volskaya Industries. Note that we have - as always - left a little wiggle room in here for you to pick one of two or more Heroes you're most familiar with. These can all be blended together pretty freely.

Note that we recommend taking two Support, two Tanka and two Defense/Offense heroes on your team. The Primary pick should always be taken where mentioned, while individual skill levels should determine the rest of the team composition.
